The Black Bears are a classic example of the sort of team that I did
not have in mind when I first devised the Bush League Factor.
You know as well as I do that I didn't come up with the BLF to be nice.
I came up with it as a way to mock the teams that deserved mockery.
Well, guess what? This team doesn't. They are the West Virginia Black
Bears and their logo features a black bear in West Virginia (well,
technically it could be somewhere else in the Appalachians, but there's
no specific reason to believe it isn't in West Virginia). The bear
looks serious and intimidating without being in any way over the top.
The mountains in the background? Yeah, that's what mountains in the
Appalachians look like.
The only bit of nonsense in this logo is the baseball standing in for
the moon over the mountain peaks. I could have done without that. But
the rest of the logo is so good that it hardly even bothers me. There
are a lot of teams that could stand to look at this logo and take notes.
Frankly, there are some teams with better scores that could stand to.
Final Score: 35 points.
Penalties: Region (egregious), 17 pts; Alliteration, 5 pts; Script, 7
pts; Scenery, 11 pts; Equipment, 13 pts.
Bonuses: Logo, -12 pts; Local, -6 pts.
