Q: What are the three rivers referred to in the name "Trois-Rivières"?

A: The Saint-Maurice, Saint-Maurice, and Saint-Maurice.

Q: I'm serious.

A: So am I.

Q: But that's only one river.

A: You are correct.

Q: So why is it called Trois-Rivières?

A: Because Sieur François Gravé du Pont couldn't count to, um, one.

Q: Again, I'm serious.

A: So am— well, okay, there's a little more to it than that.

Q: I figured.

A: So at the point where the Saint-Maurice River enters the Saint Lawrence River, there—

Q: Hold on. Saint Lawrence River?

A: Yeah. Trois-Rivières is located where the Saint-Maurice River flows into the Saint Lawrence River.

Q: Then why didn't you mention it before?

A: You didn't ask.

Q: For the third time, I'm serious.

A: And for the thir— okay, for the second time, so am I. You didn't ask what rivers are in the Trois-Rivières area. You asked what the three rivers referred to in the name "Trois-Rivières" were. And even though the Saint Lawrence River is right there, it's not any of the three rivers referred to in the name.

Q: So why is it called Trois-Rivières, then?

A: I was trying to tell you when you interrupted me.

Q: I'm sorry.

A: Apology accepted. So like I said, Trois-Rivières is located where the Saint-Maurice River flows into the Saint Lawrence River. There are two islands right at the mouth of the river, so basically the river splits into three channels at the mouth: one between the mainland and the first island, one between the two islands, and one between the second island and the mainland. (There's actually a third island a bit farther up and a couple of smaller islands, but those aren't important in this context.) When Sieur François Gravé de Pont was sailing up the Saint Lawrence River, he thought these three channels were actually three separate rivers, so the area came to be known as Trois-Rivières. It wasn't long before people realized it was really just one river, but the name stuck.

Q: So there's only two rivers in the vicinity of Trois-Rivières.

A: Well, as it turns out — and before I go any further yes I'm still being serious so don't give me that look — there is a third river nearby, one that flows into the Saint Lawrence from the south (the Saint-Maurice flows into the Saint Lawrence from the north) and whose mouth isn't that far from Trois-Rivières. But like the Saint Lawrence, it's not one of the rivers being referred to even though it's nearby.

Q: Are you sure you're not pulling my leg?

A: I promise you I'm not.

Q: Are you sure someone else wasn't pulling yours?

A: Honestly? Not entirely. But I'm telling you what I found.

Q: And are there in fact eagles in the Trois-Rivières area?

A: In the area? Yes. Probably not in the actual city at this point, but not too far outside.

Q: So the team would be named after those eagles, then.

A: Well, it's probably not a reference to the national symbol of the United States, since the team is in Canada.

Q: Are you sure? Baseball is an American symbol, too.

A: I suppose it's possible. Incidentally, it's not the first team with that name in the city. The Eastern League had a team called les Aigles de Trois-Rivières back in the 1970s. So technically I'd say this team is named after that team, and that team was named after the birds.

Q: Oh, okay.

A: I thought that might interest you.

Q: I'll be polite and say yes.

A: Then I'll be polite and not say "don't be a smartass".

Q: You just did.

A: Let's just move on before this get ugly.

Q: Okay. So do you think it's a good name?

A: Birds of prey usually make for good team names, so...yeah.

Q: And the logo?

A: It's certainly not bad. It's not the sort of logo that knocks your socks off, but there's certainly nothing wrong with it.

Q: I suppose that's a fair way to put it.

A: Thank you.

Q: Anything else I should know?

A: Well, you weren't very interested in the bit about the Eastern League, so...probably not.

Q: Sorry.

A: No biggie.

Q: So....

A: Yeah, I don't really have a good way to end this, either.

Q: I'll just see myself out, then.

A: That works.

Q: Bye.

A: Bye.

Final Score: 0 points.
Penalties: None.
Bonuses: None.
