Sometimes, teams just get it right. They come up with a logo that isn't
cartoony, doesn't have more colors than Joseph's Technicolor Dreamcoat,
isn't aimed at seven-year-olds, and actually refers to the team's name.
This is a great example. The team is Los Tigres de Quintana Roo, which
obvious translates to the Quintana Roo Tigers (Quintana Roo, pronounced
"kin TAH nuh roe", is the name of a Mexican state). And what does the
logo have in it? It has a tiger (well, a tiger's head, at least). Not
some cartoon like Tony the Tiger, not a baseball-playing tiger, but a
tiger that actually looks like a tiger. It's not looking head-on at the
viewer, but it's only slightly offset, and it is baring its teeth. You
wouldn't want to see an actual tiger with this expression and at this
angle unless it was through binoculars and/or the walls of the tiger
enclosure at a zoo, and maybe not even then. In short, it's a logo that
keeps in mind that the whole point of naming yourself after a wild cat
is to send the subconscious message to your opponents that they
shouldn't mess with you. There's no nonsense here.
What else does the logo have? It has the team's name. This is hardly
necessary but nor is it gratuitous, and it's done in a traditional
baseball script. Again, no nonsense.
There is, I have to say, a bit of nonsense with the stars. They're a
bit busy, and don't help with the compositional balance. On the other
hand, I'm willing to be a bit forgiving about them, since I know that
they represent the nine Mexican League championships the team has won.
I personally think commemorating that in a logo is unnecessary, but I
can't blame them if they want to. And this is the worst thing I can
find about this logo. I guess that means I have nothing bad to say,
doesn't it?
